TMS Entertainment has finally revealed the previously undisclosed Undead Unluck anime release date for all the fans looking forward to the series. And so, I’m unafraid to admit that my excitement is roaring through the skies as my unfulfilled dream of watching my favorite characters from Undead Unluck in live animation is soon unfolding.

And yes, I’ve not waited for years to use those negating but beautiful declarations!

But let’s rewind some three years ago when Yoshifumi Tozuka’s manga series “Undead Unluck” was expected to have an ‘unlucky’ launch as it debuted just as Covid-19 first hit the international borders.

However, despite a pandemic engulfing the world, the series mesmerized over a million fans and earned the first spot in the 6th Next Manga Awards of 2020. And so, critics tried to dim Undead Unluck’s limelight by comparing the series to other supernatural comedies, especially Chainsaw Man.

At first glance, the two series do exhibit various similarities, such as people getting a second chance at life, involvement of ‘supernatural’ abilities, someone eccentric driving the plot, and characteristic horror-inciting humor. But then, Undead Unluck doesn’t feature any fearsome devils contracting humans to grant powers. Instead, it hinges on the idea that some people can simply ‘negate’ the natural laws of regular life.

So, despite being a fantasy manga, Undead Unluck highlights how miserable life would have been in the absence of natural principles.

And so, it’s no wonder that the series was picked for an anime adaptation by not just one but two animation giants, i.e., TMS Entertainment and David Production. That’s good news, so now let’s see when Undead Unluck comes out!

Undead Unluck Anime Release Date

The official media team of the anime revealed a teaser visual during the AnimeJapan 2023 event, which confirmed that Undead Unluck Anime is set to premiere on October 7, 2023.

We can also predict that the series will have superb animation as it’s a joint venture between David Production and TMS Entertainment.

After all, David Production studio hasn’t even completed two decades after its inception and has still treated us to marvelous series like Gonzo, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Cells at Work! and Urusei Yatsura.

On the other hand, TMS Entertainment is one of the most prestigious and oldest animation studios. It has created several masterpieces, including Akira, Lupin the Third, Sonic X, The Rose of Versailles, Angel Heart, D. Gray-man, Bakugan Battle Brawlers, as well as Dr. Stone and Case Closed Series.

While joint venture productions often have a few discrepancies, Undead Unluck won’t have such issues because the studios have already declared their specific roles. TMS Entertainment will be responsible for production and planning, while the folks at David Production will focus on just animation.

The official trailer of Undead Unluck anime was released on December 17th, 2022, during the Jump Festa’23. And then a new trailer was released very recently!

While this PV was a short preview of the expected animation quality of the upcoming season, it also unveiled a few details about the cast & crew members.

But most importantly, it also gave a sneak peek at the plot of the series, which was very exciting for me. However, I’ll give you a quick review of the plot in case you’re new to the series or it’s been quite some time since you last read the first manga series.

What is Undead Unluck Anime About?

A decade ago, Fuuko Izumi discovered her ‘unluckiness’ and accidentally caused the death of over 200 people, including her parents. And so, she wanted to take her own life but decided to wait until her favorite shojo manga ended.

After spending ten years in complete seclusion, she finally gets her hands on the last chapter of her favorite series. And so, she has nothing else left to stop that suicide.

So, as Fuuko starts to count her last breaths in front of a fast-approaching train, a man named Andy sweeps her off her feet – well, quite literally.

But Andy didn’t save Fuuko for a humane cause. Instead, he wanted to use Fuuko’s unluckiness to kill himself because he was an “Undead” who wished for nothing more than a good death.

However, Andy and Fuuko soon become fugitives running around for their freedom to die as a mysterious organization named ‘Union’ is at their heels.

The plot twists and becomes trickier as Andy and Fuuko learn that they are not the only ones with powers like ‘Undead’ and ‘Unluck’ as there are many more ‘negators’ out there who’ve had it worse.

Undead Unluck Anime Cast & Crew Details

So far, the announcements have indicated that David Production will be reuniting the main crew of Fire Force anime for Undead Unluck animation. And so, Yuki Yase will be joining as the main director.

But apart from Fire Force, Yuki Yase has previously worked on masterpieces like Fate/Extra Last Encore, Monogatari series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Hidamari Sketch × Honeycomb.

Since Hideyuki Morioka will be responsible for character design, we can expect good-quality animation. After all, he has diverse experience working as an animator in Sailor Moon, Silent Mobius, Arjuna, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Hidamari Sketch, Sakura Wars, Ultimate Girls, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Meanwhile, Kenichiro Suihero is declared the music composer, so we can expect the series to have an exquisite vibe.

After all, Kenichiro has previously composed music for classic anime series such as Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World, Space Patrol Luluco, Shadows House, Goblin Slayer, The Eminence in Shadow, and Cells at Work!

The official website has also declared a few cast members. And so, we will be seeing:

Is Undead Unluck Manga Finished?

The Undead Unluck manga is ongoing and contains over 160 chapters compiled in 17 tankōbon volumes.

The first chapter of Undead Unluck manga appeared in the January 2020 issue of Shuiesha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. And so, the series has been ongoing for more than three years now.

While this may feel like a lot of time to new fans, this is but a moment in manga verse. After all, most manga series take up to a decade to complete.

And so, we don’t know for sure when the manga will end, as the current chapters have indicated at least one more major story arc. But we can anticipate learning more about the series as new chapters are released in the future.
