Tokyo ghoul is set in a world where flesh-eating species known as Ghouls dwell among the human population.
Ghouls are a ravenous cannibalistic humanoid race that feasts on human flesh to survive.
To protect humanity from these ghouls, The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) was put in place.
The CCG designates ratings to these ghouls to represent their capabilities and potential threat.

Ghouls Ranking System Explained
Ghouls are ranked based on several criteria, such as their basic strengths, threat level, activity, influence, and hostility.
Usually, Ghouls’ ratings tend to shift as they grow stronger over time. The more they consume human or ghoul flesh, the stronger they become.
There are six different rating levels, from SSS (the strongest) to C. (the weakest).
In rare situations, the base rating is increased by a symbol of ~/+. This indicates that the ghoul is thought to be at least that potent, although the evaluation may change once further information is available.
Ghoul Ranks in Order
Below is a list of the Ghoul ranks from lowest to highest.
- C Rated
- B Rated
- A Rated
- S Rated
- SS Rated
- SSS Rated
6. C-Rated Ghouls

They usually exclusively target unarmed humans and are defenseless against any ghoul investigator, making them the lowest-ranked ghoul in the system.
Rank 3 investigators, the lowest-ranking officers in the organization, can defeat these ghouls.
5. B-Rated Ghouls
The next on the list is the B-Rated Ghouls. They are usually skilled fighters that have mastered their Kagune, a ghoul’s predatory organ that serves as its weapon and claws.
B Rated Ghouls are mostly a small threat to the CCG as they are easily handled by junior investigators when necessary.
4. A-Rated Ghouls
Ghouls from rank A and above are considered a threat and are often targeted by the CCG.
A-Rated Ghouls’ Strengths are compared to those of a first-class investigator.
It would take several junior investigators to take them out. Also, a first-class investigator would have to go all out to win in a fight.
3. S Rated Ghouls

For context’s sake, let’s refer to these ghouls as Special Rated Ghouls.
They are incredibly powerful and cannot be defeated by junior investigators.
To defeat them in combat, one must be an investigator of the special class or above.
2. SS Rated Ghouls

SS means they are twice as powerful as S-Rated Ghouls.
Legendary ghouls hold this rank exclusively, and they are extremely scarce.
It would require effort from multiple CCG’s special class investigators to take them down.
1. SSS Rated Ghouls

This ghoul is the most powerful and highest-ranked in the CCG system. They are said to be three times as powerful as an average S-rated ghoul.
Although the requirements for defeating these ghouls are not specified, we do know that several of the CCG’s finest investigators will be needed.
What Rank is Ken Kaneki?

The CCG classified Kaneki as an SS-Rated Ghoul. Nevertheless, from assessing his power as the One-Eyed King, it’s safe to say that Ken Kaneki is a menace with an SSS rating.
Kaneki stands out from other ghouls in a distinct way. He possesses incredible physical strength and endurance, multiple Kagune—a feat only a select few ghouls can achieve—and unparalleled regenerative powers.
These qualities combine to make him one of the series’ strongest ghouls, if not the strongest.
Although Kaneki is classified as an SS Ghoul
